More Than 35 Years of Industry Experience
Screens Plus is a family-owned Sunshine Coast business operated by John and Melanie Ward.
John began working in the blinds, screens and home improvement industry in 1988. Since then, he has gained hands-on experience manufacturing, measuring and installing security screens and doors, awnings, blinds and shutters.
That experience now shapes the way Screens Plus operates: practical advice, careful measuring, quality installation and products chosen to suit the individual home rather than a one-size-fits-all sales approach.
For our customers, that means advice backed by decades of practical experience rather than a sales script.
Our Journey
Where it all Began
John’s career in the industry began in Brisbane in 1988 with Finn Blinds, where he was first introduced to the blinds and screening industry. It was here that he developed the practical skills and attention to detail that would become the foundation of his career.
In 1990, John joined Alpine Blinds, where he began manufacturing and installing security doors. Working directly with the products every day gave him a thorough understanding of how quality security screens should be built, fitted and perform over time.
In 1994, John moved to Kingaroy and joined the Kingaroy Joinery, manufacturing and installing security screens and doors, aluminium windows and doors, shower screens and wardrobe doors. Working across such a wide range of products provided valuable experience in understanding how different building products fit and work together.
Bringing That Experience to the Sunshine Coast
In 1996, John moved to the Sunshine Coast and established Award Security, where he manufactured and installed security screens and doors for local homes and businesses. After building the business over the next nine years, Award Security was sold in 2005.
John then continued working within the local industry as an installer for A&L Windows and Supaview, further expanding his knowledge of aluminium windows, doors and modern security screen systems.
In 2014, John and Melanie established Screens Plus with a simple goal: to provide Sunshine Coast homeowners with honest advice, quality products and experienced installation backed by decades of hands-on industry knowledge.
Today, although the business name has changed over the years, John has been manufacturing and installing security screens and doors on the Sunshine Coast continuously since 1996.
Personal Service from Start to Finish
One of the main differences when dealing with Screens Plus is that the person who measures your home also understands how the finished product will be manufactured, fitted and used.
John carries out the measuring, discusses the available options and completes the installation. This makes it easier to identify potential issues early, including unusual door frames, worn tracks, restricted clearances, difficult lock positions and openings that are not perfectly square.
Because the work is not passed from a salesperson to an unfamiliar installation team, customers receive consistent advice from the first visit through to the completed job.
Melanie manages much of the administration and customer support behind the scenes, helping keep the process organised and providing customers with a familiar point of contact throughout.

After more than 35 years in the industry, John has seen security screens, doors and installation methods change considerably.
That experience helps us look beyond brand names and recommend products based on what will actually suit the home. Some customers want the highest level of security, while others are more concerned with airflow, visibility, coastal corrosion resistance, keeping pets secure or replacing an older door that no longer works properly.
We explain the differences between the available options clearly, including where a premium product is worthwhile and where a simpler solution may be enough.
Our aim is not to sell every customer the most expensive option. It is to recommend a product that suits the property, location, budget and way the door or screen will be used.
Local Knowledge That matters
Having worked on Sunshine Coast homes since 1996, John understands the conditions that local security screens, doors and window products are exposed to.
Homes close to the ocean may need greater corrosion protection, while Hinterland properties can have different ventilation, insect and maintenance requirements. Older homes may need custom alterations, and new builds often require careful colour matching and products that blend neatly with modern architecture.
That local knowledge helps us recommend products that suit the home’s location and environment, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
