Do All Three Meet Australian Standards?

SecureView, Crimsafe and Prowler Proof all offer security doors tested to the applicable Australian Standards when manufactured and installed in compliant configurations.

The current standards divide the requirements into three areas:

• AS 5039.1:2023 covers classification and performance.
• AS 5039.2:2024 covers installation.
• AS 5039.3:2023 covers the methods of test.

The security-rated products supplied by Screens Plus are classified to SL200. This means the complete security-screen system must withstand five dynamic impacts of 200 joules while remaining secure within its frame. Dynamic impact is only one part of the assessment. Other applicable tests examine resistance to methods of forced entry such as levering, pulling, probing and cutting.

It is important to compare like with like. Crimsafe Regular advertises resistance to a single impact of up to 550 joules, while other Crimsafe models publish still higher single-impact figures. These are impressive results, but a maximum single-impact figure is not the same test as five repeated SL200 impacts under the Australian Standard.

The Australian Standards classification is not a competition to achieve the largest marketing number. A homeowner should confirm that the exact door being quoted carries the appropriate product compliance identification and has been fitted as a complete system.

How Is the Stainless-Steel Mesh Secured?

The method used to retain the mesh inside the aluminium frame is one of the clearest differences between these systems.

SecureView

SecureView uses 0.8 mm high-tensile 316 marine-grade stainless-steel mesh. The mesh is secured within a two-part wedge using 3M VHB high-performance acrylic adhesive, and the wedge is pressure-locked into the aluminium frame.

3M VHB is not ordinary household double-sided tape. This type of bonding technology is used in demanding automotive, architectural and industrial applications. Its strength comes from the complete engineered fixing system: the adhesive, pressure-locking wedges and purpose-designed frame work together.

The system does not require screws or rivets through the mesh. It also maintains separation between the stainless-steel mesh and aluminium frame, reducing the opportunity for galvanic corrosion caused by dissimilar metals contacting in the presence of moisture and salt.

Saltwater Series uses the same fundamental fixing method and 316 stainless-steel mesh, with additional protective treatment intended for more corrosive environments.

Crimsafe Regular

Crimsafe Regular uses 0.9 mm Tensile Tuff 304 structural-grade stainless-steel mesh. Its Screw-Clamp system secures the mesh around the frame using tamper-resistant screws and a clamping strip.

This creates an extremely strong, heavy-duty connection. Crimsafe is well known for strength, and in our view the product does what it says it will do.

Crimsafe has several product levels, and their appearance and construction details vary. Some newer products, including Crimsafe Classic, incorporate a clip-in cover that conceals the screws and produces a cleaner finish. Customers should check which Crimsafe model is included in their quote rather than assuming every product in the range is identical.

Prowler Proof ForceField

ForceField uses 316 marine-grade stainless-steel Meshtec mesh with a full-perimeter chemical bond. A simple way to understand full-perimeter bonding is to think about how a vehicle windscreen is bonded continuously into its surrounding frame rather than being held at only a few isolated points.

ForceField is also distinguished by its seamless welded corners and in-house powder coating. From our experience supplying it, ForceField is a very attractive, well-finished product. We did not experience customer or installation problems with ForceField during the years we supplied it.

Which Security Door Is Strongest?

Crimsafe’s greatest strength is exactly that: strength. Its heavier 0.9 mm mesh and Screw-Clamp system create an exceptionally robust security screen. A homeowner who prioritises maximum heavy-duty construction may find this reassuring.

However, the mesh is only one part of a completed security door. The locks, hinges, interlocks, strike fixings, tracks and the structure surrounding the opening must all transfer and resist the forces being applied.

This is why an advertised mesh or screen impact figure should not be viewed in isolation. A security door is ultimately installed into an existing aluminium, timber, masonry or other residential opening. Under a sufficiently extreme attack, another part of the door or supporting structure may fail before the stainless-steel mesh itself.

In our experience, Screens Plus has never had a SecureView security door fail during an attempted residential break-in. That does not mean any residential door is impenetrable. It means the system has provided the level of practical protection expected in the real attempted break-ins reported to us.

We consider SL200 a sensible security level for residential doors. It requires a door to resist repeated impacts as a complete system, while recognising that a residential entry is not a bank vault or a purpose-built high-security structure.

Why the Lock, Hinges and Installation Still Matter

All three systems are supplied with three-point locking in the security-door configurations being compared. A three-point lock secures the door at the top, centre and bottom, making it substantially more difficult to lever the upper or lower section away from the frame.

The lock still needs to engage correctly. A poorly measured or misaligned door can cause the locking points to bind, leading the customer to force the handle or stop using the lock entirely. Hinges and strike plates must also be secured into adequate supporting material with appropriate fixings.

Sliding security doors require further attention. Effective interlocks, correctly adjusted top and bottom rollers, suitable tracks and aligned locking points all contribute to the completed installation.

No premium brand can compensate for an incorrectly measured or poorly installed door. Product compliance and installation compliance are related, but they are not the same thing.

Appearance, Visibility and Airflow

Appearance is subjective, but there are noticeable differences between the three systems.

SecureView has a clean, contemporary appearance. Its fine 0.8 mm black mesh is easy to see through from inside the home, and the bonded wedge system avoids visible screws or rivets securing the mesh. This makes it particularly attractive for front entries, sliding doors, stackers and homes with views.

ForceField is similarly clear to look through. Its welded corners and powder coating after fabrication produce a seamless, high-quality finish. Customers who place significant value on fabrication and finish may find ForceField particularly appealing.

Crimsafe Regular uses heavier 0.9 mm mesh and its distinctive Screw-Clamp construction. It still provides good outward visibility, but the heavier mesh and frame treatment create a more substantial visual presence. Other Crimsafe models offer different framing and concealed-fixing treatments, so appearance should be assessed using the exact model being quoted.

None of these products would make a home feel as though it is behind traditional Diamond Grille bars. All allow natural light, airflow and outward visibility while protecting an open doorway.

Which Is Better for Sunshine Coast Coastal Conditions?

Coastal suitability involves more than asking whether a product contains stainless steel.

Crimsafe Regular uses 304 structural-grade stainless-steel mesh. Crimsafe uses protective coatings, insulation and corrosion-control measures, and the company publishes extensive corrosion testing for its products. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe Crimsafe as unsuitable for coastal conditions.

However, 316 marine-grade stainless steel has greater inherent resistance to chloride corrosion than 304 stainless steel. Crimsafe’s fixing method also uses stainless-steel screws within an aluminium-framed system. In exposed salt-laden environments, the grades of metal, protective layers, isolation between materials and ongoing maintenance all become important.

ForceField uses 316 marine-grade stainless-steel mesh and a full-perimeter bonded fixing system. In our experience, it is a well-made product and is better suited to coastal exposure than many standard security screens.

For the most exposed Sunshine Coast properties, our recommendation is SecureView Saltwater Series. It starts with 316 marine-grade stainless-steel mesh and a fixing method that separates the mesh from the aluminium frame. It then adds protective treatment intended for harsh coastal and corrosive environments.

The Saltwater Series frame coating has been independently tested for 3,000 hours under the AS 2331.3.1 neutral salt-spray test. It is designed for properties within approximately 500 metres of the coastline and for some elevated or exposed homes further inland where prevailing winds carry salt air. It is supported by a 20-year extended warranty when properly registered, cleaned and maintained under the manufacturer’s conditions.

Distance from the ocean is not the only consideration. Elevation, prevailing winds, surrounding buildings, direct surf spray and swimming-pool chemicals can all influence exposure. Two homes in the same Sunshine Coast suburb may require different recommendations.

We also find that customers further inland choose Saltwater Series because they value its additional corrosion protection and the reassurance of reducing the likelihood of future mesh or frame problems.

Warranty Differences

Warranty length is useful, but the type of warranty and its conditions matter just as much.

Prowler Proof offers ForceField with a ten-year full-replacement warranty. If an eligible screen fails because of materials or workmanship, Prowler Proof states that it supplies a replacement rather than repairing the original screen. The replacement receives a new warranty period, and the warranty follows the screen if the home changes ownership. This is an excellent warranty and a genuine strength of the ForceField product.

Crimsafe Regular currently carries a ten-year standard warranty, with an optional extension to twelve years. Other products in the Crimsafe range have different terms and warranty periods.

SecureView EclipX carries an eleven-year standard warranty and a fifteen-year registered warranty. Saltwater Series carries a one-year standard warranty and a twenty-year extended warranty when registered. Extended warranties are subject to registration, cleaning and maintenance conditions.

Locks, handles, hinges, rollers, door closers and other hardware may be covered separately from the mesh and frame. Customers should read the written warranty rather than comparing only the largest number printed in a brochure.

How Do the Prices Compare?

Prices vary between dealers and depend on the size and configuration of the opening, frame colour, locking hardware and installation requirements.

In our quoting experience, SecureView has generally been around 10 to 20 per cent less expensive than comparable Crimsafe or ForceField doors, depending on the dealer and the particular quotation. This should be treated as a practical observation rather than a fixed national price difference.

ForceField and Crimsafe are both premium products. Their pricing reflects their construction, brand position, manufacturing and warranty arrangements. SecureView’s appeal is that it combines tested security, clean appearance, clear visibility and competitive pricing.

Crimsafe Regular, Prowler Proof ForceField and SecureView are all credible security-door systems. Crimsafe is exceptionally strong. ForceField is beautifully manufactured and has an outstanding replacement warranty. SecureView combines tested security, clear visibility, contemporary appearance and competitive pricing.

For many Sunshine Coast homes, particularly those affected by coastal exposure, SecureView Saltwater Series is the system we generally recommend. That recommendation is based on its 316 marine-grade mesh, separation between dissimilar metals, additional protective treatment, published corrosion testing and long registered warranty—not on a claim that the other products are poor.

Whichever brand you choose, accurate measuring, three-point locking, appropriate hinges and fixings, effective sliding-door interlocks and professional installation remain essential. A well-known product name is only one part of a properly secured opening.
